Autumn at Lost Maples

This is a painting I did from photos I took while my husband Richard and I went to the Texas Hill Country. We went to Lost Maples State Park, Garner State Park and Enchanted Rock all in the hill country. We went to Fredericksburg one day and I visited galleries while my husband went to the Nemitz Museum. We ate lunch in Fredericksburg and then came back to Kerrville where we stayed. We went one day to Garner State Park and one day to Lost Maples State Park.

Rose from Flower Mound, TX

This is a rose we had when we lived in Flower Mound, Texas and it grew in our yard. It is a Jackson and Perkins Hybrid Tea rose and I don't remember the name of it but took several photos of it and put it on a canvas linen panel. It is an original oil painting by Ruth Housley. This is a very unique rose and very pretty.

This is an original oil painting on portrait canvas of a Clematis flower. My brother had a Clematis plant wrapped around his light post near the driveway to his home and it was so pretty winding all around the post from top to bottom. It was a white one with lots of flowers.

I love flowers of all kinds and have painted several varieties. I do get lots of compliements on my flower paintings and that is what I started doing a lot of when I first started painting in oils.

These are so delicate and only bloom for a couple of weeks briefly. Rochester, New York is the Lilac Capital of the World. On August 18, 2006, New York State Governor George Pataki proclaimed the Lilac as the State bush.

"The Praying Hands"

I Timothy 2:8 "I will therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up Holy hands, without wrath and doubting."

I did an artwork in the past of "The Hands and Feet" and it was a vision the Lord had showed me of hands. I wanted to do more with hands and have always loved the painting of "The Praying Hands" so I wanted to paint it myself.
The background of the painting has red, blue, and purple as well as some white and the flesh tone has white in it.

"The Sounds of Thunder"

This painting was a vision I had of white horses and wanted to paint it at autumn season.
The hills in the background and autumn trees with the bright autumn tree at the left of the horses compliment each other.

The horses are running free and wild and I was going to put a black horse at the lead of the white ones but thought it would stand out too much so I put the dark brown one.

I have a granddaughter that likes horses and used to ride them and she knew how to saddle a horse too. She is a teenager now and things change when you get to be teenagers.

The Angel Protecting the Child

I have been wanting to do some angels and just decided to do just one and put a child in the landscape scene. He is chasing a butterfly and the angel is protecting him from falling off of the cliff.

I used several greens in this painting as well as blues, browns, yellows, white and pink for the angels gown.

Autumns Glow

This is an original oil painting of an autumn landscape. The autumn season is one of my favorite times of the year. The leaves changing on the trees, NFL football games as well as college and high school games. Time for fall festivals, hot chocolate, making popcorn balls, carmel apples, having chili, goulashes, or homemade pies. Time to think about the holidays, for wearing sweaters and jackets before it gets too cold for coats.

I liked the brightness of the trees in the foreground and the blue that is reflected from the sky above into the water.

I did this painting several years ago in a workshop and I love the big Irises. The color of these are just gorgeous.

I like to go to Argyle Acres in the spring and take photos of their Irises when they are blooming. It is open to the public. There are so many varieties and colors of Irises and they are all so pretty.

Serenity II

I did this ocean scene after we visited Galveston, Texas and also have visited Ocean City, Maryland. I have been to San Diego, California years ago with husband, daughter and in-laws.

I took all the photos that I had taken and made my own composition. It has a lot of blues, some gray for the seagulls and brown for the sand on the shore as well as the white.

River of Living Water

I took many photos when we visited Rocky Mountains and took photos of this river. The water was really cold and rushing down stream. It was so beautiful and I wanted to capture it on canvas because of the moving and rushing of the water.

Blue Jay at Home in Pine Tree

The big, noisy blue jay is one of the most colorful of the wild birds that have responded favorably to civilization and become common in the shade trees of eastern towns, but it is essentially a woodland creature and is still most abundant in open oak and beech forests. After breeding, jays gather in flocks that do much to enliven the fall woods with their calls and flashes of blue.

The blue jay is about three quarters vegetarian--acorns, beechnuts, and corn being its staple foods. During summer its diet becomes preponderantly insectivorous. Jays bury more acorns and beechnuts than they can eat and are therefore important agents in planting oak and beech forests.

Their voice is extremely varied: harsh calls, a trumpeting whistle, a scream like a red-shouldered hawk, a flicker-like call, and a sond of soft warbles and twitters.

They make their nests in a tree crotch or on branches near the main trunk up a bout 10 or 15 feet; made of sticks with grass and other softer material at the center for form a cup. The 4 to 6 buff to greenish eggs are spotted with brown, most heavily at the large end.

Thailand Parrot Flower

This is an orignal oil painting done by Ruth Housley on 12x9 stretched canvas.
The botanical name of the plant is Impatiens psittacina. It is a rare plant and was identified at the Royal Botanical Garden Kew in 1901 and was discovered in 1899 in the Shaw States of Burma. It is only found in portions of Burma and northern Thailand and as such is quite rare. According to the grower it is very difficult to cultivate and requires a local natural pollinator to produce seeds. Fog in the Mountains

I have taken many photos of mountains when we visited Colorado and wanted to do a mountain scene with fog in and around the mountain. Also wanted to add the stream, trees, rocks and the deer coming to the stream for a drink of water.

Red Covered Bridge

Most of the covered bridges are not drivable anymore but interesting. I like to photograph them as well as paint the old bridges. I wanted to do this one at wintertime with snow on the ground. The big tree to the left is a cedar tree.

Rolling Waves

I did this painting after visiting Ocean City, Maryland and taking lots of photos of the ocean. I visited relatives also while I was there. I added the seagulls for life in the painting and they always seem to be near the water. It has a lot of blue but restful.

"The Legend of the Dogwood Tree"

Two thousand years ago, few trees in the Middle East were big enough to construct anythings. However, one tree was valued above the others for its trunk and fine, strong wood.

When the Romans, came to rule over Jerusalem, their government used this same timber to build crosses for executing criminals. A group of workers were assigned to gather wood for the crosses. Before long, every Roman offical knew the best wood came from these gatherers of execution wood, so those workers became poplar.

One day, the wood gatherers received a special request. An officer of the Roman court came and said, "The King of the Jews is to be put to death. Deliver an extra-large cross made from the finest wood." So, a fresh tree was cut from the forest of the trees with thick trunks and fine, strong wood. An extra-tall (and extra-heavy) cross was quickly made and delivered.

When Christ was on earth, the Dogwood grew

To a towering size with a lovely hue

Its branches were strong and interwoven

For the cross of Christ its timbers were chosen

Being distressed at the use of this wood

Christ made a promise still holds good

"Never again shall the Dogwood grow

Seneca Rocks, WV

Seneca Rocks is a park in Eastern West Virginia. These rocks are famous for mountain climbers as well as the scenic attraction.
Seneca Rocks was purchased by the federal government in 1969. It is one of the best-known landmarks in West Virginia. It is unknown who the first person was to climb Seneca Rocks. It is in the Monongahela National Forest.

The photo's I worked from had an old house near Seneca Rocks but I wanted to put a cabin in the scene instead of the house. I have visited this place several times with family in my youth.

Autumn at Red Grist Mill

Grist mills are of the past and the old architecture is very interesting if they are preserved.
It was delightful to paint this scene with all the autumn colors and the old grist mill. The red grist mill and the orange and yellow of the trees make a warm painting.

Prairie Dog Twin Fork Of The Red River

I took several photo's of the Palo Duro Canyon State Park in Texas several years ago when we visited the canyon.
I wanted to capture on canvas the canyon as well as the river with all the trees. The orange color of the mountain compliments the blue in the water.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park contains 18,438 acres of scenic, northern most portion of the Palo Duro Canyon. The canyon is 120 miles long, as much as 20 miles, wide, and has a maximum depth of more than 800 feet. Its elevation at the rim is 3,500 feet above sea level. It is often claimed that Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States. The largest is Grand Canyon.

This old barn was standing in Flower Mound, Texas in the 1980's. It has been demolished and they have built houses where it used to stand. I took several photos of it before it was demolished.
It was a very interesting old barn to view and to photograph. I wanted to capture it on canvas since it is no longer standing.

My husband and I visited Turner Falls near Davis,Oklahoma a few years ago.

I enjoy taking photo's of sunsets. I try to use some of them in my landscapes or seascapes.

This cabin is in the Texas hill country and still standing. It is located on the many acres that LBJohnson owned and is the Danz cabin.

There are longhorns, deer as well as other wildlife on the acreage. I wanted to capture the old cabin as well as the bluebonnets because it was springtime when we visted this place.

"The Good Shepherd"

Azaleas and Piney Woods, Texas

My husband and I went to East Texas during March, 2005 and took several photos of the azaleas and piney woods in Nacogdoches, Texas.

The flowers were so beautiful and in full color. The dogwood was in bloom in white and pink. The evergreen trees and the flowers were picturesque. The colors of the azaleas were red, light pink, darker pinks, white and yellow.

Autumn Season

I finished a winter scene and wanted to do an autumn scene. I will be doing summer and spring yet for the four seasons.

I enjoy the autumn time of the year with the coolness in the air and the leaves turning their brilliant colors and season for football and hot chocolate. I have a lot of warm colors in the painting and is a country scene.

Autumn On Dolly Sods, WV

I had several photos of the Dolly Sods area in Eastern West Virginia and wanted to paint it on canvas. I visited this place with my family as a teenager.

I wanted to capture the blazing red of the wild blueberry bushes at autumn time. You can see the color of red for miles because there are a lot of these blueberry bushes and since I did paint several of the blueberry bushes this is a very warm painting.

I visited Spruce Knob Lake in West Virginia with family when I was a teenager.
Spruce Knob is the highest point in the state of West Virginia.

I visited the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia with family when I was a teenager, and also visited relatives that lived near Richmond.

Majestic American Bald Eagle

The bald eagle is a North American bird and noted for their size as a bird of prey, with strength, powerful flight, and keenness of vision. They make their nests near water so it is more convenient for getting food for their young. Their nests are larger than any other birds nest. They keep adding branches to their nests for many years and they really do get big.

Southwest Pottery

I had the inspiration to paint some pottery and wanted to put corn with a chili pepper in the still life to add interest and different shapes.

I drew some pottery vases in drawing class several years ago, and I found the ones that I drew and decided to do a painting and then add the corn and chili pepper for added interest that would fit in for this still life setting.

Mabry Grist Mill

I have visited the Blue Ridge Mountains and drove on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia several years ago with parents and relatives. The Blue Ridge Mountains are so pretty and a nice drive with the view so spectacular.

I wanted to paint this scene at autumn for the splash of color and have the old grist mill reflected on the water. I enjoy painting old buildings such as barns, grist mills, and cabins.

(Old) Alton Bridge, TX

I have taken many photos of this old bridge and wanted to capture it on canvas. All of the articles I have heard and read about this bridge it was so amazing. I have also walked on this bridge when we first moved to Denton and been here a couple other times.

The Old Alton Bridge spans Hickory Creek on Copper Canyon Road where the village of Alton was established in 1849 as Denton County seat of government. This bridge was built in 1884 by the King Iron and Bridge Manufacturing Company, the Old Alton Bridge stands alone as the last remaining Pratt Truss Bridge in Denton County. The bridge was named to the National Register of Historic Places on July 8, 1988. The Old Alton Bridge has been restored and is now part of Dentons Pedestrian and Equestrian Trail.

The water is muddy because of all the rain we had in the spring of 2007 and that area was closed off for a while because of the high water.

I took photos of the Caprock Canyon State Park when we visted this beautiful picturesque place and then wanted to capture it on canvas.

The shapes of the rocks in the canyon, the mountain and the sun shining on them was inspiring to paint and also the wildflowers that were growing near the mountain.

Peaceful Autumn Day

The bright color of the trees in the background and the blue of the sky makes a peaceful scene to go fishing or just sit on the rock and read a good book and enjoy the scene.

The blues and oranges are complimentary to each other and makes a warm setting. I enjoy the autumn season of the year because of all the changing of the leaves on trees. The coolness in the air and the looking forward to the colder weather.

I took photos of Long's Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park and wanted to paint it for a long time. I started this painting back in September or October of 2008 but wanted to get it finished so I would not have a painting unfinished. I have always enjoyed the mountains and their strength and beauty.
